SERVICES FOR OLDER PEOPLE

There are a range of services which are provided in the borough of Islington to help older residents, some are provided by Islington Council and others are voluntary. If you would like to be referred to any of these service please contact us or contact them direct using the information below.


Partners Assisted Decorations Scheme


Partners has a small budget to help tenants decorate a room. The eligibility criteria are:


• You must be 70 or over or a disabled person in receipt of a recognised disability benefit.
• There must be no other able bodied person under the age of 60 living at the address
• You must not have had any decorating carried out by Partners or Islington Council within the last 7 years

If you would like to be considered for the scheme you must contact us and complete an application form.


Floating Support Agencies

SHP
SHP are a floating support service whose aim is to help people stay in their homes, through giving advice and practical support regarding benefits, befriending, advice on care and counselling, and getting help with contacting family members.

SHINE
Shine offer a wide range of interventions and particularly target those who are 75 and over, those with heart or breathing problems, and those with children under 5 at home. They offer advice and support on your home, finance, health and general information.

Age UK Islington 

Guidance & practical support – you can talk to us about anything you’re struggling with. This might be if you’re feeling low, for bereavement support, or about housing or money worries.
Connections to partners – we start by listening to what you want to achieve and then we work out how you can get there. We can help connect you to specialist support through our network of partners.
Connections to emergency help – to access food and other vital supplies.
Wellbeing calls - to check-in regularly with. Travel cards and accessible transport


Free and subsidised transport around London if you’re aged over 66 or have a disability or sensory impairment. Also, rent mobility scooters and find accessible activities near you.

Free mobility scooter hire
A mobility scooter can be essential in keeping you active in the community. You can use it to go shopping or see friends. To be eligible to hire one, you must be:
• aged over 16
• have a mobility impairment

Blue Badges
The Blue Badge scheme provides special parking provisions for people with a physical or mental health disability that severely impairs their ability to walk short distances. The scheme enables parking for either drivers or passengers closer to their required destination.

Applying or renewing a Blue Badge
To apply for a Blue Badge for the first time or renew a badge that is due to expire, you must complete an application online. Community Care Services

Support can be provided at home, at a day centre, at a care home and sometimes it can be a combination of these.

The main role of Adult Social Services is to support older people, disabled people with a long term condition or illness to live as independently as possible, preferably in their own home.

If you want to speak to someone about getting support from Adult Social Services then please call them on 0207 527 2299. ( Mon- Fri 9-5pm)

Help in your Home

A Home Carer can help with personal care, shopping, collecting your pension, paying your bills and household chores.

The service is tailored to meet your needs, and Home Care is only provided following an assessment. Please call them on 0207527 2299.

Meals in the Home

This Service is run by Fresh Community Meals who run the service on behalf on Islington Council. Specialist and cultural diets are catered for as well as frozen and hot meals. There is a set charge for each meal provided.

Occupational Therapy

Is a service that assesses the difficulties that people and carers are having, such as getting in and out of bed, getting on and off the toilet and negotiating steps and stairs.

The team can offer advice about alternative ways to carry out tasks, with or without equipment and small adaptations or liaise with the landlord to consider larger adaptations.

The team can also offer a one off visit, those people who are having trouble getting in and out of the bath and would benefit from a board, seat or rail to assist them.

Services for blind or partially sighted people

A rehabilitation worker is available to provide an assessment to people with a visual impairment and advice what services are available to them.

This service is available on Mondays, 2-4.30pm and Fridays, 2-4.30pm. Please call them on 0207 527 4443.
