Staying Warm and Well - Where to go and what to do

17/12/2025

Know where to turn to this winter

A&E departments are for people who are seriously ill or have life-threatening conditions. They will be very busy this winter.

If it’s a life-threatening emergency, call 999 immediately.

If it’s not, there are many other NHS services that can help you. Find out about our range of local NHS services:

Do you know about Pharmacy First?

Cold weather can make minor illnesses harder to manage if you live with a health condition. Your local pharmacist can give fast advice and, in many cases, supply medicines directly without the need for a GP appointment.

Evening and weekend GP appointments

If you find it hard to see your GP during the day, local GP practices also offer evening and weekend appointments at extended access hubs.

Ask your GP practice or search online for ‘GP Hubs’ and the borough where you live.

Urgent treatment and walk-in centres

For urgent but non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries – like sprains, minor burns or cuts – visit an urgent treatment centre.

No appointment needed. Open every day.

NHS 111 can guide you to the right service

Mental health and wellbeing

If you need urgent help for your mental health, support is available day and night.

Call 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk

For ongoing support, you can also refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies.

Emergency dental care

Toothache, swelling or a knocked-out tooth can be very painful. NHS 111 can help you find urgent dental care, including same day appointments if needed.

Warm spaces

There are places you can go to keep warm during winter. These venues provide a welcoming warm space for anyone who wants to drop in, have a cup of tea, keep warm and have a friendly chat.

If you are struggling with having the heating on at home and the cost-of-living crisis is worrying you, why not come along to a friendly welcoming place.

They are held at various venues like churches, pubs, cafes, community centres, village halls, libraries etc.
